“Red isn’t a common hair color, so redheads stand out in a crowd,” says Adrian Wallace of the Rita Hazan Salon in New York. “Even when the bold and sexy color is not quite right, everyone takes notice. And when done correctly, the look is stamped in your memory.” Think the confident and sexy Christina Hendricks, Julianne Moore and Nicole Kidman.
Ever wonder if you can wear red hair color yourself? Almost everyone can, save for those with dark complexions. “It’s harsh and can look fake,” says Wallace. For everyone else, here are Wallace’s recommendations for the best red. If you are a:
Blonde with fair skin: Try strawberry.
Blonde with medium/olive skin: Strawberry, or copper with strawberry highlights, is the most flattering.
Brunette with fair skin: Opt for copper with strawberry, or copper highlights.
Brunette with medium skin: Auburn with copper highlights looks the most natural.
If you decide to go red, keep in mind it fades the fastest of any hair color. Keep yours vibrant by washing your hair less often and using a sulfate-free shampoo. You should also schedule touch-ups every four to six weeks.
