Pretty Simple: Best Valentine’s Day Hair and Makeup

By Jenna Mahoney

Big night, big glamour may work on the red carpet. But in reality, a soft, demure, romantic approach to beauty is more appropriate for date night. The romantic look is more natural and highlights your best features so you appear to glow from within. (Think more Leighton Meester than Christina Aguilera.) Opt for soft waves, pretty pink lips and lightly gilded eyes for results that are simply gorgeous.

There’s something inherently romantic about just-from-the sea waves. Luckily, the look is easy to achieve. The fastest way is to scrunch and spray. Use a sea-salt hair thickener and apply to bunches all around the head. For a more finished look, blow-dry hair and use a curling iron. A medium-barreled iron on its highest setting will do the trick. Wrap thick pieces of locks around the barrel and clamp for the count of two. When the entire head is finished, tousle hair and spritz with a flexible-hold hairspray to prevent flyways.

Pink is pretty and natural, and it makes for more kissable lips than red. The key to having sweet lips is smooth skin. Lightly exfoliate your kisser with a washcloth and hydrate with a balm. When it comes to formula, keep in mind that stains have lasting power, matte finishes are more sophisticated, and neutral glossy lips add a hint of glam.

Just a touch of gold gives your lids an alluring look -- without overpowering your natural beauty. Prep lids with a primer, which gives shadow a smooth finish and lasting power. Dust a lightly shimmered gold down across the lid and up to the crease. Curl lashes and apply a lengthening mascara in subtle brown.
