Gorgeous Gray

By Anne L. Fritz

While many women cover their grays, others choose to flaunt them.

Models at the Chanel Spring 2010 Couture show walked down the runway with obvious gray streaks in their bangs and heart-shaped updos. Kristen McMenamy set off a media firestorm when she showed off her waist-length gray tresses in Vogue’s age issue, and hipster celebs, including Kate Moss, Lady Gaga and Kelly Osbourne, have been rocking locks so blond they are actually gray.

To make this look work for you, it needs to be intentional -- gray roots that are longer than an inch are not what this style is all about. Either go really light to gronde (a gray-blond mix) or color in a shock of gray a la Stacy London.

On the other hand, critics of the look say it is sometimes entirely accidental. Some gossip columns have speculated that Kate Moss’s gray locks were actually the result of her not rubbing in her dry shampoo enough. To avoid the unintentional gray-hair look, try applying dry shampoo before bedtime so the friction from your pillow helps gradually blend it in while you sleep.
